A major 960km loop starting from Nelson, that’ll show off some of the best sights, the variety of coastlines and wonderful ways of water that this lovely region has to offer.
Start off at the tranquil waters and woodland walks of Lake Rotoriti. Later the road winds alongside the majestic Buller Gorge, and then once over the on West Coast you have dramatic seascapes, particularly with the blow holes at Punakaiki, plus heading back inland, the historical interests of places like Reefton.
Trekking on, you can relax in the Hot Springs at Maruia and once over the Lewis Pass, dip in again if you wish at Hanmer Springs, just to make sure how good they are! There you’ll also find easy forest mountain biking or walking tracks, crazy golf courses, boutique boutiques and a fun traditional lolly shop! Weaving up to Kaikoura you can venture out whale watching but you’ll also get a hugely stirring drive up the east coastline. The hot and steamy theme can be continued by journeying on the Marlborough Flyer at Blenheim and Picton, with a gorgeous winding drive back overlooking some of the idyllic Marlborough Sounds.
Add to those all the activities, dining and shopping available in Nelson itself and you have all the ingredients for a superb road trip.
