2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible
Have your own Mini adventure in this brilliant stylish cabrio.
Pocket sized fun in the sun. This bright blue bundle of brilliance is a Cooper S convertible, the superfast Mini version with go cart handling and seating for four….although the two in the back will need to be somewhat on the mini side themselves. With the manual gearbox you can zip through the traffic and zoom along the open road, enjoying the sun and the miles of smiles on the way. It can be packed with a reasonable amount of luggage and it’s certainly packed with safety features. Yes you could hire a more spacious, practical, boring SUV, but I thought you wanted to really enjoy yourselves on holiday?!

What's she like to drive?
The pocket rocket label isn’t just marketing fluff. It’s a precise, peppy little puppy that loves to play in the sun, the manual gearbox is very well suited to these cars. Add in the whine of the supercharger as you rise through the rev range and you’ll want to play all day. Guys who think it’s more for the ladies need to get more secure – why should they have all the fun? Cruising around feeling cool and happy in a super stylish little car is one of life’s good pleasures.
What do I need to get used to?
Not being able to wipe that smile off your face? You’ll need your sunglasses to admire the dazzling chrome accents in the sunshine, and if that sunshine is too much, you can just partially open the top like a traditional sunroof. The ride is somewhat firm and so you will get a few creaks from the interior, and you’ll need to take care reversing as visibility out of the corners is limited with the roof up. However you do have rear parking sensors and it’s just another excuse to put the roof down…
What about safety and reliability?
The Mini might be mini but BMW have packed a huge amount of safety kit into it, making it one of the very safest cars on our fleet. Along with loads of airbags and ABS you’ve got Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). We maintain it to a high standard as we transport our family around in it too, and like all our cars it has to pass a 6 monthly Certificate of Fitness for rental car roadworthiness.
What condition is she in?
Very good. This is a New Zealand new car with relatively low km for the age and has led a pretty pampered life.
How much luggage can fit?
Well, possibly 1 large suitcase in the boot. Far better is you can squash a surprising amount of soft luggage in there though, plus it has an easy load function when the roof is up, See this video for operation. Please refer to the Seating & Luggage tab above for exact dimensions. Of course if the rear seats are vacant you have those for bags too. The Mini can in theory accommodate four adults but a six footer can’t comfortably sit behind a six footer, so realistically we say it’s a 3 seater. ISOFIX mounts are available for compatible child seats.
Period perspective
It was seriously hip when launched and is still quite the hipster-zipster now…
And the best driving tracks from the same year as the car would be?
2005 wasn’t too a bad year for some good sounds – here are its best super cooled chilled driving tunes to complement your Mini:
- Twilight Stolen – Module
- That’s How Life Goes – Janita
- Quartett – Orbit Experience
Now we acknowledge driving music is a very subjective thing, but clearly here, we’re right. So download, hire our Portable Bluetooth Speaker & enjoy!
How fast will she go Mister?
Pretty quick – just under 8 seconds is the 0 – 60 mph, but it just feels so nippy at any speed.
How would a certain Mr Clarkson describe it?
“I absolutely love it. I have been volunteering to go into town to get the milk and then coming home without it, on purpose, so I can go again”
And the RentAClassic description?
“Another cuppa anyone….?!”
