Coastal drives, vast accessible beaches, majestic mountains, interesting eateries, self drive New Zealand at it’s best. All these tours are easily reached in half a day or less. Below are our favourate Rent A Classic detours on a local road trip.
Rabbit Island: for BBQs and Picnics, with huge flat sandy beaches
Mapua: Galleries and gifts, Fish & Chips on the wharf, (SmokeHouse), Ferry trips along the Estuary.
En route: Jester House Cafe with Eels & Boutique Accommodation
Kaiteriteri: Voted one of the best beaches in the world by UK Guardian newspaper. It’s also the place to catch regular water taxis to memorable Abel Tasman tours and walks. A short drive away is the lovely Split Apple Rock beach, (just a 5 minute walk from the road, signposted off the main road). Just further on is Marahau, the gateway to Abel Tasman walks, kayaking or horse treks.
Doing self drive New Zealand is just as good inland. Wineries, olive groves, more great driving roads and especially:
Tapawera: The Hidden Cafe with Sculpture Garden
Nelson Lakes: Mountains meet still water, woodland walks, and of course in winter, there’s the Rainbow Ski Field. Why not call into the TopHouse Historic Guesthouse for drinks at NZs smallest pub, or high tea in the Cafe en route?
