This 1,220km figure of eight loop based out of Christchurch is a bit of a serious road trip, but then it takes in some serious sights.
Vast expanses of inland water await at Wanaka, Tekapo and Mount Cook, with the latter particularly being a fantastic site for walks, (mini) glacier gazing and star gazing too. You could go onto Queenstown but our route heads east across rolling hills, particularly lovely in Autumn, and on to historical Dunedin, to indulge in some wildlife, history, train rides and cafe culture.
The route back to Christchurch takes in the Moeraki boulders, coastal roads and inland scenic routes.
