What's she like to drive?
Available from Sep/Oct….cruise the islands of New Zealand in a Mercedes V8 coupe for hire, built for cruising the autobahns of Germany without barely noticing they were there. Something with a real V8 rasp that can carry 4 adults and luggage in comfort and still stand out from the crowd. In its time, this was the top of the Mercedes range, and a serious rival for the Aston Martin V8 as driven by Timothy Daltons James Bond in his 1987 Living Daylights outing. And until we have one of those on the fleet you’ll just have to believe us. The main difference we suspect though, is that the Mercedes is still going strong whereas 007 may have some explaining to Q to do….
What do I need to get used to?
Holding the horses back probably. It can behave perfectly docile around town but can bite if severely provoked out of it. The handbrake is dash mounted as most Mercedes ones were back then and there’s a rather weird after market gear lever security lock that’s kind of embedded in the car now but you can safely ignore that. One of the most memorable features is the way the seat belt extends forward for you on an electric arm, like being dressed by your own Germanic Jeeves….
What about safety and reliability?
This car was one of the safest and best equipped in its day, and still isn’t too far behind now. Whilst lacking airbags you do have ABS, and you certainly don’t have to worry about whether you can keep up with modern traffic. Just like all our cars it has to pass the same Certificate of Fitness (CoF) test required for all rental cars every 6 months.
What condition is she in?
Pretty pampered. The leather seats are in good condition still, that V8 engine has been re-conditioned and with a recent respray the exterior is superb.
How much luggage can fit?
A surprising amount in the large boot and if there are just two of you there’s all that extra space in the rear seats. Please refer to the Seating & Luggage tab above for exact dimensions for luggage.
And the best driving tracks from the same year as the car would be?
The music of the 80’s was so much better than most of its cars, (this Mercedes being one of the few exceptions of course), so a tricky choice but we’ve gone for:
- The Right Stuff (it is) – Bryan Ferry
- Fragile (it isn’t) – Sting
- Blue Mood (you won’t be) – Swing Out Sister
Now we acknowledge driving music is a very subjective thing, but clearly here, we’re right. So download, hire our Portable Bluetooth Speaker & enjoy!
How fast will she go Mister?
Umm, plenty fast enough. You’ll get to, (and stay at), legal speed limits pretty quickly.
How would a certain Mr Clarkson describe it?
“…awe inspiring…..rides, handles, goes and stops with real poise, panache and purpose…”
And the RentAClassic description?
“Sehr, sehr gut…”
A Teutonic tour de force. If you like solid roof over your head, this is a sublime and imperious way for 3 or 4 adults to cover the vast roads of New Zealand, with superb landscape views and fresh air out of the side of this pillarless, (or should that be peerless?), luxury Mercedes V8 coupe for hire.
