What a fantastic little car. I’m a mechanic by trade, and couldn’t fault this car.
Excellent service, very personal and accommodating, we will be back. The vehicle was presented in pristine condition given the kilometers and age, and we even enjoyed giving it a groom. Performance and drive was top notch too.
It is the only German car I have driven that had a definite positive personality.
Girls roadie to Brunner. Fabulous weather, fab cars, hood down both ways, fur coats perfect! Loved it!
I secretly hired a Merc convertible as a surprise for my husband’s 60th birthday and what a success it was. We did a day trip in this cute red Merc and reluctantly returned the car at the end of a great day. The upshot is that we now have one of our own in the garage as my husband was besotted! A great surprise which could not have turned out better.
This little car made our week! Touring wine country with the top down and just eating up the mountain roads – excellent fun! Thanks Stephen for your help.
What a fantastic car for our South Island Road Trip! It has made the long drives more fun and being able to drive some of the coastal roads with the top down will be an unforgettable experience.
What's she like to drive?
Superbly smooth cruising with the ability to show a real clean pair of red heels should you want to, backed up by the supercharger offering consummate, long overtaking legs as required. Raspy exhaust note as the revs rise, and real confident stick-ability in the twisties, this car feels solid and planted. When driving, your eyes are drawn down those retro bonnet power bulges, beckoning you to pursue the horizon. Automatic 4 speed transmission makes for an easy, relaxed drive or you can make it more involving and take control anytime you want to with the Tiptronic clutchless change system.
What do I need to get used to?
Surely sports cars weren’t meant to be this comfortable and inviting? There’s that ‘whoa’ matching red and black all over interior that invites all sorts of comparisons but certainly isn’t dull. Leather seats, zoned climate control for both occupants, cruise control, brushed aluminum dash, white retro dials and a wind deflector to prevent unpleasant drafts. But comfortable doesn’t mean flaccid, the steering is very direct and nicely weighted, with the ride cushioned yet firm. In its glorious imperial red this isn’t a car for shrinking violets, and you might get asked to perform the folding metal roof trick several times. Note headroom with the roof up is tight if you’re much over 6 foot, but then that’s a good excuse to keep it down, with very effective heated seats meaning that can extend well into the evenings. The South Island is ideal convertible weather but the sun is surprisingly strong – between November and March, a hat and sunblock are essential accessories.
What about safety and reliability?
Of the highest Mercedes standards, with front and side airbags for both passenger and driver, very positive brakes with ABS, ESP traction control, (tested that), and in the extremely unlikely event of issues you have full roadside assistance included in your hire charge. She’s regularly serviced and has to pass the Certificate of Fitness (CoF) test required for rental cars every 6 months.
What condition is she in?
Very good, although bearing a few marks on the red interior and rear wheel trims. We only acquire cars of a high standard that have been well looked after inside and out. This model is no exception with a fairly low mileage for the age.
How much luggage can fit?
That depends on how much you like the roof down. With the Mercedes SLK roof up, a couple of large and a couple of medium holdalls should fit in the boot fine. With the roof down however, some of those holdalls, especially if deeper than 20cm, will have to stay behind at your accommodation and there’s no extra bag space behind the seats. This video showing the roof mechanism will give you a better idea, (note it’s of the same model car but not the exact car you’ll be driving). Do refer to the Seating & Luggage tab above for exact dimensions, and we always recommend the use of soft baggage, not suitcases. Having said that, several holidaying couples have successfully enjoyed use of the car with luggage for over a week or even two though.
And the best driving tracks from the same year as the car would be?
These songs are just made for driving roof down, stereo cranked up, and enjoying life. For 1998 the best driving tracks for very cool cruisin’ are:
- Thank you – Dido
- Godsend – DC Talk
- Everybody here wants
your Mercedesyou – Jeff Buckley
Now we acknowledge driving music is a very subjective thing, but clearly here, we’re right. So download, hire our Portable Bluetooth Speaker & enjoy!
How fast will she go Mister?
You’ll arrive at the 100km/h legal limit surprisingly smoothly and swiftly, especially using the manual gear change……but of course, you can have a lot of supercharged fun getting there….
How would a certain Mr Clarkson describe it?
“Oh great, it’s my car but half the price (and better)…”
And the RentAClassic description for the Mercedes SLK?
“…well strictly speaking he was comparing a later faster SLK model to his larger Mercedes SL……but we think this is a car that both the sexes will be fighting to drive…Mercedes SLK = Superb, Luxurious, & Keen as German mustard…”
What's important to you?
Different strokes for different folks….
Do you want sensible things like comfort, luggage space, affordability (OK….)….
or more indulgent stuff like luxury, handling and powwwwerrrrr (yeah)?!
We think all our cars are totally brilliant, but here’s how this Mercedes compares to our other cars on some key rental criteria.
